The house also should be at least 15 feet off the ground. Attach two of the three brackets to a vertical tree limb with a total of four heavy nails or wood screws. The further you place the box from human activity the better your chances of having an owl use it it should be no closer than 150 feet. If you are not sure then hold the blade up to the line and mark the line slightly larger then the blade width kerf.

Inside the woods the direction the barred owl house faces doesn t matter as much. Locate box within 200 of water if possible. Place 3 4 of wood chips in bottom of box. Barred owls prefer to nest in lowland mature forest areas.

You should take care to hang the nest box within 300 feet of a water source pond stream lake or river.

The entrance hole should face away from the prevailing rain direction if possible. Birds such as tree swallows and bluebirds will nest closely to one another although they will drive away others of their own species. Or you can put two boxes back to back on a single pole. Place the box 10 to 15 feet up in a tree.

Speak to the barred owls. Barred owls make distinctive calls. If the box is mounted on a pole use a baffle to prevent cats raccoons and other predators from reaching it. So don t place a nest box on a building or a bare pole. The rooftop needs to be 10 feet above the ground or higher.
